Burrowing and Terrestrial Tarantulas

Burrowing tarantulas are characterized by a heavier abdomen and generally stockier appearance as compared to their arboreal cousins.

Their need for speed is lessened by the fact that they are able to retreat into an underground burrow to safety.

A female tarantula may live in one burrow for her entire lifetime, if there is enough to eat in the close proximity. With their sit-and-wait approach to hunting, there needs to be many opportunities for prey to wander by.
